The Best Pure White Paint Colors: A Designer’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect White
There is something timeless about a beautiful white interior. Whether you're dreaming of a bright, airy kitchen, a classic white trim, or an entire home wrapped in soft white walls, the right shade of white can completely transform a space.
But here's the thing about white paint: not all whites are created equal!
Some whites feel crisp and clean, others lean warm and creamy, and some can unexpectedly pull blue, gray, or even yellow once they're on your walls. What looks like the perfect white on a paint swatch can look completely different once it's applied to an entire room.
So, where do you start?
As an interior designer, I love using white as a foundation for beautiful spaces. It creates a timeless backdrop, allows architectural details and furnishings to shine, and gives you so much flexibility when layering in color and texture.
Today, I'm sharing some of my favorite pure white paint colors, what makes each one unique, and how to choose the right white for your home.
First, What Makes a White Paint Color "Pure White"?
When we talk about pure white paint, we're generally referring to whites that have very little noticeable yellow, beige, or creamy undertones.
These shades tend to feel cleaner, brighter, and more neutral than warmer whites.
However, even the crispest whites have undertones. Some lean slightly cool, while others have a softer, more balanced appearance.
It's also important to remember that lighting plays a huge role in how white paint looks. Natural light, artificial lighting, flooring, countertops, and surrounding finishes can all influence how a white appears in your home.
That's why testing paint colors in your actual space is always worth the extra step!
My Favorite Pure White Paint Colors
1. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65)
If you're looking for a crisp, clean white, Chantilly Lace is one of my go-to recommendations.
This is one of Benjamin Moore's brightest and cleanest whites. It has very minimal undertones, making it a beautiful option for homeowners who want a fresh, true-white appearance without the obvious warmth of a creamy white.
Why I love it:
Crisp and clean without feeling overly stark in the right lighting.
Beautiful on walls, trim, cabinetry, and ceilings.
Works especially well in spaces with plenty of natural light.
A great option for a fresh, modern, or transitional interior.
Designer tip: Chantilly Lace is a great choice when you want your white walls and trim to feel cohesive and bright. Just be mindful that it can look quite cool in north-facing rooms.
2. Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White (SW 7757)
For those who want a really bright, clean white, High Reflective White is worth considering.
With an exceptionally high Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 93, this is one of the brightest whites you'll find. It reflects a tremendous amount of light and has very little noticeable warmth.
Why I love it:
Extremely bright and clean.
Great for creating a fresh, minimal look.
A beautiful option for trim and ceilings.
Works well when you want a very crisp white backdrop.
Designer tip: This is not necessarily the white I'd choose for every room. In certain lighting conditions, it can feel a little stark. If you're looking for a softer, more inviting white, I'd consider one of the options below.
3. Sherwin-Williams Extra White (SW 7006)
Extra White is a classic, crisp white with subtle cool undertones.
It's a popular choice for trim, doors, cabinetry, and even walls when you want a bright, clean finish.
Unlike warmer whites, Extra White doesn't have a creamy appearance. Its cooler undertones make it a great pairing for cooler color palettes, grays, blues, and greens.
Why I love it:
A clean, crisp white with a slightly cool feel.
Excellent for trim, doors, and millwork.
Pairs beautifully with cool-toned paint colors.
A great option for a more contemporary aesthetic.
Designer tip: If you're using Extra White on trim, pay attention to the wall color. Pairing it with a warm white wall can sometimes make the contrast feel more noticeable than you intended.
4. Benjamin Moore Super White (OC-152)
Super White is another beautiful option for anyone looking for a bright, clean white.
It has a crisp appearance with subtle cool undertones, making it a great choice for spaces where you want a fresh, bright finish without introducing too much warmth.
Why I love it:
Bright and clean without an obvious creamy undertone.
Beautiful for trim and cabinetry.
Works well in contemporary and transitional homes.
A lovely option for a cohesive, all-white palette.
Designer tip: Super White is particularly pretty when paired with natural wood tones, darker accents, and more saturated colors. The contrast creates a timeless look that doesn't feel overly sterile.
5. Sherwin-Williams Pure White (SW 7005)
Despite its name, Pure White isn't quite a stark, true white. In fact, that's exactly why I love it!
Pure White has a subtle warmth that softens the overall appearance without making it feel creamy or beige. It strikes a beautiful balance between crisp and inviting.
Why I love it:
A softer alternative to cooler, brighter whites.
Versatile enough for walls, trim, and cabinetry.
Beautiful in both traditional and modern homes.
Pairs effortlessly with warm wood tones and natural materials.
Designer tip: If you love the look of a bright white but don't want your home to feel cold, Pure White is one of the first colors I'd sample. It's a wonderful middle ground.
How to Choose the Right White for Your Home
Now that we've covered some of my favorites, how do you decide which one is right for your space?
Here are a few things I always consider when selecting white paint for a project.
1. Pay attention to natural light.
North-facing rooms tend to receive cooler natural light, which can make white paint appear grayer or bluer. South-facing rooms generally receive warmer light, which can bring out yellow or creamy undertones.
A white that looks beautiful in one room may look completely different in another!
2. Consider your existing finishes.
Your flooring, countertops, backsplash, cabinetry, and furniture all influence how a white paint color will look.
For example, a very cool white next to warm wood floors can sometimes feel disconnected. On the other hand, a softer white can help tie those warmer finishes together.
3. Decide how much contrast you want.
Do you want your walls, trim, and ceilings to be the same shade of white? Or do you prefer a little contrast between each surface?
Using the same white throughout a room can create a seamless, classic look. Choosing a brighter white for trim can add definition and make architectural details stand out.
Neither approach is wrong—it simply depends on the look you're trying to achieve.
4. Always sample before committing!
I cannot stress this enough. Paint samples are your best friend!
I recommend sampling at least two or three shades on large sample boards and moving them around the room throughout the day. Look at them in natural light, with your lamps on, and alongside your existing finishes.
It may seem like an extra step, but it can save you from repainting an entire room later.
Final Thoughts: The Best White Is the One That Works in Your Home
White paint may seem like one of the easiest decisions when designing a home, but choosing the right shade can make all the difference.
Whether you love the crispness of Chantilly Lace, the brightness of High Reflective White, or the softer warmth of Sherwin-Williams Pure White, there's a beautiful white for just about every home and design style.
My biggest piece of advice? Don't choose a white simply because it's popular. Consider your lighting, existing finishes, and the overall feeling you want your home to have.
The goal isn't just to find a pretty white paint color. It's to create a space that feels beautiful, comfortable, and uniquely yours.
